The Trinidad Police Department is sporting a new set of wheels — and it won't cost taxpayers a dime, said TPD Chief Kenneth Thrailkill. According to a news release issued by the TPD, the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette was donated to the TPD by Arcata resident Richard Gonzalez. "The donor did not wish the car to be sold but used by the police department to educate about the dangers of speeding and (to help) departments in making presentations to local high schools and other venues," the release stated.

A donation from RWS Services in Fortuna allowed the chronically cash-strapped department to outfit the Corvette with emergency equipment and a radio. Graphics were donated by Sharp Auto Graphics of Eureka. "It is the intent of the police department to share this vehicle with other law enforcement agencies in Humboldt County," Thrailkill said. The vehicle is scheduled to make its first public appearance at the Samoa Drag Strip on Saturday.
